Hisab Kitab · Made in India
Flatmate expense tracker that stops the "kitna hua yaar?" messages
Log rent, electricity, internet, gas, groceries, and one-off household buys as they happen. Hisab Kitab keeps a running tally and sends a WhatsApp-safe summary when it's time to settle.
The problem
- •WhatsApp screenshots of bills get lost. Nobody remembers who paid for the router.
- •One flatmate has the master bedroom — splitting rent 50/50 isn't fair, but doing custom percentages in your head is tedious.
- •The person who logs everything into a spreadsheet quietly resents it.
- •Gift-month roommate forgets they owe for the gas cylinder from two months ago.
What you get
Percentage split for unequal rooms
Set rent to 60/40 (or any mix) once; it applies every time rent is logged.
Variable bills, no maths
Log electricity when it comes, pick the split, done. Hisab Kitab figures out balances.
Snap a bill photo
Attach the electricity bill PDF or a Blinkit screenshot — proof lives with the expense.
Simplify debts on settle day
Pick the 1st or salary day; everyone taps Simplify, pays minimum UPI transfers, done.
Monthly rollover
A new month shows last month's bills summed up — no restart ritual.
Fair pro-rata for moving in / out
Mid-month move? Mark the days a flatmate was present and that month's rent / utilities pro-rate.
How it works
- 1Create a group called "Flat 302"
Add your flatmates by email or phone. If they're not on the app, we send a WhatsApp invite.
- 2Pin categories & split defaults
Rent → percentage split. Utilities → equal. Groceries → equal. Set these once; every entry inherits.
- 3Log bills within 24 hours
Older than a week and someone forgets or disputes. Set a reminder for the 1st of every month.
- 4Settle on a fixed day
Open the group → Simplify debts → tap Settle. UPI opens with the exact amount.
FAQs
How should we split rent with unequal rooms?
The common rule in India: proportional to room area or market rent of that bedroom type. Agree once, set it as a percentage split in the app, forget it. If the master is 200 sq ft and the smaller is 140 sq ft, that's 60/40.
Mid-month move — how to handle rent?
Pro-rate by days present. For utilities that hadn't been read yet, exclude the person who left. Hisab Kitab lets you edit a single expense's split without touching others.
A guest stayed for two weeks — do they contribute?
Convention is 0.5 person for utilities and groceries for the stay. For rent, most hosts don't charge. Hisab Kitab's Exact split mode handles this cleanly.
How do you handle the maid / cook / cleaner payment?
Create a category called "House staff" (or similar). Log the monthly payment, split equal. Simpler than tracking who paid cash which month.
Try it in 30 seconds
Set the group up once in 5 minutes. 10 minutes a month after that, forever.
