How to Settle Up With Friends on UPI — Fast, Fair, No App-Switching
Step-by-step: how to settle shared expenses with friends over UPI. The one-tap workflow, how to minimise transfers in a group, and when to use Request Money.
The hardest part of splitting bills in India isn't the maths — it's the five app-switches to settle. Here's the fastest workflow.
Setup, once
- Save your UPI ID in your Hisab Kitab profile (Settings → Your profile).
- Save each regular friend's VPA when you settle with them the first time; it caches automatically.
- Set your default UPI app in Android (long-press any UPI link and pick) so taps don't ask every time.
The one-tap flow
- On a friend's profile, tap Settle up.
- Direction and amount are pre-filled from the balance.
- Hit Record settlement. The UPI deep-link opens your chosen app with amount and VPA ready.
- Confirm the payment inside UPI. When you return to Hisab Kitab, the balance is already updated.
In a group with many friends
Use Simplify debts. For a 5-person trip, instead of 10 criss-cross transfers, you'll see the 3-4 minimum transfers that zero everyone out. Each row is a one-tap UPI link.
Edge cases
- Friend doesn't use UPI: record settlement in cash with a note. Balance clears either way.
- Partial settlement: enter a smaller amount; the leftover stays as balance.
- UPI limit hit for the day: pay what you can; the rest carries over.
Hisab Kitab is the fastest UPI-based way to settle up with friends. Free, one tap, no bank account required.
